Originally, it was never about cows for me. I didn't understand them: and I am so happy that that eventually changed. I'd worked on various farms with various animals - sheep, pigs, goats, horses, endless chickens. I had a bit of experience with cows on a couple of farms; just moving them from one field to another, but that was it. Alongside my office job, I was eager for something extra on a farm - working with animals and the land, so I posted in a farm work Facebook group saying I was looking for part time work. And that's when I met Lynn and Missy. They were thorough-bread Holstein show cows, living on a small farm nearby. The owner was looking for some Sunday help just to give him a day off - I was to go twice a day to give them their special diets and muck them out. Those Sundays were an joy. Those girls taught me the wonder of cows - a temperament I never knew and I wish was talked about more. As calves (like puppies) they skip when they see you, they attach to you, they want to play, they want interaction, they're super curious and are magnificently gentle. You imprint on them and they imprint on you. I stayed with Lynn and Missy for 18 months and I miss them dearly. I recommend to everyone: go hug a cow - it's soul food magic!
