MEET THE GANG
Find out more about each of the cows below and see whom you feel a connection with the most.
The Matriarch
Laxmi
I am Baladeva's mother, and I am the matriarch of the ladies. Though my son is the boss, and I love him dearly we cannot spend time together as Baladeva still likes to drink milk. He's a bit big for this, it's also not good for him at his age. I am 15 years old and very laid back and easily approachable. I love to be stroked and make a fuss.
The Juvenile Delinquent
Abhimanu
I am 4 years old and I came here from a farm in Glouster with my mother, Tara Ma. I have been called a juvenile delinquent and love to annoy my caregiver (though they also annoy me!) I am fearless, bold and nothing much bothers me, and I pull some funny faces when the base of my tail is scratched, which I love.
The Mother of the Juvenile Delinquent
Tara Ma
I am Abhimanu's mother and I am 8 years old. I am also a Glouster breed, one of the oldest in the UK dating back to the 13th century. Once a prolific breed, we are almost an endangered species!
I love being scratched at the back of my head where I can't reach and will gladly offer a lick in return for some good fuss!
Though I have very large and impressive horns, I would never bother you with them.
The Excitable One
Surabhi
I'm an inquisitive and happy 12-year old cow, who can get quite excited rather easily. I love my back rubbed and will move around until you hit the right spot!I moved here after my friend Agnes, who lived next door to my field, could no longer come and visit due to poor health. She had heard I was leaving, never to return and raised the funds for me to have a home for life here!
The Bear
Jaganath
Don't let my nickname scare you, I love any amount of fuss and cuddling, there is no such thing as "too much". I am 13 years old and was reared by a young girl who had some horses, and she taught me some of the same tricks. I can now lift my feet on command, just like a horse. She also used to ride on my back! However, when she moved out, her mother could no longer care for me so I found my new home here. Before living here I had never met another cow in my life, turns out they smell weird! I used to often try and jump the gates here, but as I get older arthritis in my back legs can cause me issues. Luckily my carer uses oil on them, which helps!
The Trouble Maker
Krsna
I think the old farmer had a soft spot for me, as I and another cow got to come and live here. I enjoy finding uses for things, like my water trough, which doubles as a footbath and pond (went flipped). If you see me shaking my head with my tongue out, then there is probably something I am not happy about. However, don't be afraid, you won't find a bad bone in my body! I love the base of my tail scratched and I show affection by licking.
The Oldest in the Herd
Guru Seva Dasi
My mother was the first cow at the sanctuary 21 years ago, sadly she and my brother are no longer with us and I miss them both dearly.
A kind police officer took my mother back to the wrong field after she had escaped the sanctuary, where she met my father and then had me.
When I was younger I would have been considered feisty, though nowadays I am a laidback loner.
I love having my back scratched but advise you to approach me from behind.
The Protector
Cokila Devi
As I was born here on the farm I have lived a largely peaceful and happy life. I show appreciation to my mother, Janmastami Devi by being her fierce protector!
I am currently pregnant with my first calf, which could be making me hungry all the time. I'm always on the lookout for a tasty morsel of food and will eat and eat and eat if allowed.
I'm 4 years old, and I've been told I am cheeky, inquisitive and a bit of a madam. However, I love to make new friends, and would likely come and say hello if you visit us.
I love being made a fuss of, and if you sit on the grass and I feel like I need a rest, I may very well join you!
The Youngster
Rakhi Purnima
I am one of the youngest of the gang at 2 years old and keep my bovine friends on their toes! I am super inquisitive and have to know about everything that's happening in the sanctuary. I'm excitable and fear nothing. When my mum, Subham, came to the sanctuary in 2022 she was pregnant with me. Unfortunately she has since crossed the rainbow bridge, but she has left me in the loving embrace of Cow Companions.
The Shy One
Purnima Devi
I am one of the youngest of the gang at 2 years old and am the third generation of the Devi line here at the sanctuary. My mum is Cokila Devi and we were both born here at the sanctuary. I am a beautifully natured, inquisitive girl, who is quite shy but getting braver by the day!
This is the first day out on land after winter,
...we aren't usually this energetic!
